Let’s Build a Plan for Your Dog Together

I offer in-home dog training throughout Southwest Florida, including Port Charlotte, Punta Gorda, North Port, and the surrounding areas. Every training program is built around your dog and your life — not a generic checklist. The goal is a dog who actually listens, who can settle and relax without constant prompting, and who’s genuinely enjoyable to walk, take on outings, and just hang around the house with.

If you’ve worked with another trainer before and it didn’t stick, that’s not a reflection of you or your dog. Training isn’t one-size-fits-all — what works for one dog can completely miss the mark for another. Figuring out what your dog actually needs, and building a plan around that, is what I’m good at.

  • 10+ yearsOver the past decade, I’ve worked with hundreds of dogs and the families who love them.
  • Training in your homeTraining happens right in your home, in the environment where your dog actually lives and learns.
  • Virtual optionsOutside the Port Charlotte, Punta Gorda, or North Port area? I also offer virtual consultations and online training programs, so distance doesn’t have to get in the way of the help you’re looking for.

Dog Trainer Serving Port Charlotte, Punta Gorda & North Port

Hi! I’m MJ, owner of Highwater Dog Training

“Over the past decade, I’ve learned that good dog training has less to do with the dog and more to do with the people on the other end of the leash. Every household comes to me with a different routine, different goals, and a different dog — so I’ve never been able to get behind a one-size-fits-all program. Your training plan should look like your life, not a template.

A lot of the families I work with have already tried something else first. Things looked good for a few weeks, and then the same behaviors crept back in. That pattern is exactly what shaped how I train now — I’m less interested in a quick fix than I am in figuring out why the old approach didn’t hold, and building something that actually does. Working together in your home, I teach you and your dog the same language, so what we build in our lessons is still standing long after I’m gone.”

MJ did a fantastic job with our job and was a pleasure to work with! I feel like we have more control over Norman and can better handle his issues with our other dog. She's incredibly professional and great with dogs.

Response from the owner

Highwater Dog TrainingThank you so much for the wonderful review, I'm so glad I was able to help you with Norman - he's such a sweet boy!

Emily Greenhalgh

We loved working with MJ. Our dogs are friendly, but intense. They would overwhelm guests. We needed training ourselves almost as much as the dogs and MJ was great with that.

She was thoughtful about what we actually needed and wanted to accomplish and changed her techniques and lessons around our dogs vs just doing a one-sized fits all approach. The actual practicing we had to do was bite sized enough that it felt do-able and we could see the dogs making progress right away. Both "Back" and "Place" have been life savers for us.

Her balanced approach to training and her patience with both us and the dogs has made me feel much more confident for having people over.

I would absolutely recommend her to anyone (and so would Maggie and Cooper! )

Response from the owner

Highwater Dog TrainingThank you Emily! You've done amazing work with Maggie and Cooper, they're lucky to have you!

Debbie Winnick

This is our 4th dog, but the most challenging puppy we have had. He is a love, but stubborn and thinks he is dominant. MJ gave us great ideas and really understood and supported us with the behavioral issues we were having with our new puppy, Riley. He is doing great and we are using all the new skills we learned from MJ. She is direct, but very calm...in just 6 private sessions with MJ we have pragmatic techniques that help Riley - he is well socialized, walks well [or, at least, better] on a leash and plays well with others.

Response from the owner

Highwater Dog TrainingThank you Debbie! I was so happy to help you and Riley!

Sarah Casey

MJ is a dog whisperer! Quincy had so much trouble walking on a leash and settling in the house before we started training. He is a different dog now! MJ helped so much with commands and explained why certain things work and don’t work with training a dog. She is the best!

Response from the owner

Highwater Dog TrainingThank you Sarah! Quincy is such a good boy, I'm so glad I was able to help!

Kris Jones

I have attended numerous training sessions for reactive dogs in MA and RI. MJ is the best because her training is balanced and, most importantly, effective. I wish I had met her many years ago. Thank you, MJ!

Michele Crowley

We had a great experience with MJ at her Reactive Rover class with our Brittany Cooper. MJ has a great teaching ability of how to handle dogs. She is very knowledgeable, patient and kind. She has a great way of explaining how dogs think and why the act the way they do. We highly recommend MJ as a dog trainer.

Response from the owner

Highwater Dog TrainingThank you Michele!

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is your style of training, and what tools do you use?

There's no single formula I apply to every dog, since every dog learns differently and needs their own plan. What guides everything is your dog's personality, how they take in information, their current behavior, and what you're ultimately trying to achieve together.

At the core, my approach blends positive reinforcement with structure, consistency, and genuinely clear communication. Food, toys, play, and praise all show up as motivators, and I try to keep the process something your dog actually enjoys, not just tolerates.

Here's something worth understanding: no tool teaches a dog anything on its own. What actually creates learning is timing, clarity, and consistency on your end. Every so often, I'll suggest a specific tool, not because it does the training for you, but because it might make communication clearer or handling safer in a specific situation. When that happens, you'll know exactly why I'm suggesting it, get space to ask questions, and nothing goes into use without your full approval first.

Ultimately, you're the one shaping your dog's behavior, not any piece of equipment. What I'm working toward is a dog who genuinely understands expectations, feels secure, and enjoys the process of working with you, all built on trust and skills that hold up well past our time together.

Where do lessons take place?

Lessons typically take place at your home. Since that's where your dog already feels at ease, it usually means faster progress with less adjustment time needed. Once things are going well on your home turf, we can shift some lessons out into public spaces too, so your dog gets real practice with manners in the everyday situations where they'll actually need them.

Will I be involved in my dog's training?

Definitely. Whatever program you land on, part of my job is making sure you understand your dog every bit as much as your dog is learning to understand you.

With private lessons, you're hands-on from the very first session. I'll walk you through each step, answer whatever questions come up, and make sure you know how to keep building progress in between our meetings.

With one of the Homeschool programs, I'm very hands-on with your dog from the very beginning. From there, I'll bring you up to speed on exactly what's been taught and how to reinforce and build on it at home. It's a solid fit for busier households, or for dogs who benefit from extra reps during the week when you might not have as much time to dedicate to practicing on your own.

Either path leads to the same place: you walking away with real knowledge and genuine confidence to keep things moving forward long after our lessons wrap up.

Do you train aggressive dogs?

I do. Dog-to-dog aggression, resource guarding, reactivity, and similar behavior challenges make up a big part of the work I do regularly.

Since every situation looks different, we start by talking through what's actually happening, your dog's background (bite history included), and what outcome you're hoping for, before either of us commits to working together.

I'll also be straightforward with you: certain cases involving serious aggression directed at people may genuinely be better handled by a trainer whose focus is specifically built around that. If I think you and your dog would have better odds with someone else, I'll tell you plainly and help steer you toward the right resource.

What matters most to me is that you and your dog end up with the support that's actually right for your situation, whoever that ends up being.

How long are lessons?

Sessions generally land somewhere in the 60 to 90 minute range.
