Dog Training for Snowbirds & Seasonal Residents

Spending the winter in Southwest Florida with your dog? In-home training fits right into your season, whether you’re settling into a condo in Punta Gorda, a villa in North Port or a winter rental near Englewood or Venice.

The short answer

Yes, you can get real training done in one season. My in-home programs are typically completed in four to eight weeks, and Homeschool lets me train your dog while you’re out enjoying your winter.

Reach out before you arrive (or as soon as you land) so we can make the most of your time here.

Winter life with a dog

What seasonal residents ask me for most

A new home base

Condo hallways, elevators, a new lanai and new neighbors all at once. Lots of dogs take a few weeks to settle into their winter home.

Barking through shared walls

In a condo or villa, barking at the door or the neighbor’s dog carries. We work on what’s behind it, not just the noise.

Busy walking paths

Peak season means more people, bikes, golf carts and other dogs on the paths. Loose-leash walking and calm passing make a big difference.

Patios and outings

Settling under the table at a waterfront restaurant is a skill. We can practice it out in the real world.

A new winter puppy

Picked up a puppy for the season? Potty and crate training, nipping and first basics fit neatly into a winter stay.

Grandkids and visitors

Season means company. We work on calm greetings at the door and good manners around visiting kids.

Fitting it in

Making the most of your season

A Southwest Florida beach at sunset

You came down here to enjoy the season, not to spend it wrestling a leash. So we plan training around your winter.

If you want to be hands-on, private lesson programs like Essentials (typically four weeks) or Mild Manners (typically six) fit neatly into a few months here.

If you’d rather be out on the water or the course, Homeschool programs like Jump Start and Dream Dog have me training your dog at home while you’re out, with a weekly lesson to hand it all over to you.

New winter puppy? Puppy Foundations, Puppy Plus+ and Puppy Pro cover potty training, the crate, nipping and first basics, so your puppy heads north with good habits.

Then, when it’s time to head back north, most programs include help between lessons and a full year of support, so you can keep it going wherever you spend the summer.

Seasonal tips

Settling your dog into Southwest Florida for the winter

  • Give it a couple of weeks. A new place, new smells and new neighbors are a lot. Keep routines (meals, walks, bedtime) the same as at home.
  • Watch the heat, even in winter. Sunny afternoons can still heat up pavement. Check it with the back of your hand: if you can’t hold it there for seven seconds, it’s too hot for paws.
  • Mind the water. Keep your dog leashed and back from the edges of ponds, canals and lakes, where alligators can live.
  • Check the beach rules. Many local beaches don’t allow dogs on the sand, so check before you go.
  • License if you’re staying a while. Charlotte County requires a pet license for dogs living in the county for 28 or more days in a row. See the county’s pet license page for details.
Questions

Snowbird & Seasonal Resident FAQ

Can we start before we arrive in Florida?

Reach out before you head down and we can talk through your dog and your dates, so training can start soon after you arrive. I also offer virtual consultations, which can be a good way to get started from up north.

We're only here for a few months. Is that enough time?

Usually, yes. My programs are typically completed in four to eight weeks, so most of them fit comfortably inside a winter stay. If you have less time, single private lessons focused on one or two goals are another option.

Can you train our dog while we're out golfing or on the boat?

Yes, that's what Homeschool is for. I come to your home three times a week and train your dog while you're out, then we meet once a week so I can show you what your dog learned and how to keep it going.

What happens when we head back north?

Most of my programs include help between lessons, access to my private client community and a full year of support after your lessons, so you're not on your own once you leave.

Our condo has pet rules. Can training help?

Training can help with the things neighbors notice most, like barking, pulling in hallways and jumping on people. Your association's rules about size, number of pets or where dogs can go are up to your association, so check your documents or ask your manager about those.
