I have attended numerous training sessions for reactive dogs in MA and RI. MJ is the best because her training is balanced and, most importantly, effective. I wish I had met her many years ago. Thank you, MJ!
Dog Training in Englewood, FL
Looking for a dog trainer in Englewood who comes to you? You’re in the right place!
I offer private, in-home dog training for puppies and adult dogs throughout Englewood, from Rotonda West to Manasota Key. We work on the things that make everyday life easier, right where they happen.
No cookie-cutter plans. Just practical training built around your dog, your home and your goals.
Real-Life Training for Englewood Dogs
Your dog doesn’t live in a training facility, so their training shouldn’t all happen in one, either.
We start at home, with the door manners, leash walking and settling that make the biggest difference day to day. Then we take it out to your street, Lemon Bay Park or Dearborn Street when your dog is ready.
You’ll learn right alongside your dog, so the progress holds up long after our lessons wrap up.

Meet Your Englewood Dog Trainer
Hi! I’m MJ, the owner and trainer behind Highwater Dog Training.
I’ve been professionally training dogs for over 10 years, and I’m an Animal Behavior College Certified Dog Trainer. Over the years, I’ve worked with dogs of all breeds, ages, personalities, and behavior challenges.
My approach is pretty simple: I want training to make your everyday life with your dog better. That means looking at the whole picture, figuring out what’s contributing to the behavior, and building a training plan that makes sense for your household.
I also believe that my job doesn’t end when our training sessions do. My programs include support between lessons and long-term guidance so you have someone to turn to as you continue working with your dog.

Where We Practice Around Englewood
Englewood has a laid-back, beach-town pace, with plenty of real-life practice spots. When your dog is ready, we can work at places like these:
- 01
Ann & Chuck Dever Paw Park
For social dogs: dog park manners, check-ins and a calm way in and out.
- 02
Lemon Bay Park
Leashed walks on the nature trails, with birds, water and new smells.
- 03
Dearborn Street
Polite walking downtown past shops, patios and people.
- 04
Your own street
Golf carts, bikes, neighbors and the dog behind the fence.
Dog Life in Englewood, Florida
Every town has its own everyday challenges. Here’s what I see most with Englewood dogs, and how we work on it.
Beach-town living
Boats, fishing gear, bikes and lots of visitors. A dog who can settle and walk nicely fits right into the Englewood pace.
Busy winters
Season brings more traffic, guests and dogs on the sidewalks. Training can fit around your season, too.
Wildlife & toads
Ponds, preserves and Bufo toads after rain. We keep “leave it” and recall sharp.
Storm season
Thunderstorms and hurricane prep are part of life here. Crate comfort and calm around noise make that season easier.
What Local Dog Owners Say
MJ was unbelievable with our young corgi!! We had tried everything to get him to not explode when someone left the house but in one session it was greatly improved. She was so in tuned with why our guy was going mad and gave us a plan to coach him through it greatly improving our everyday life. She is amazing!
Peaches and I just completed Distracted Dog training. Classes were fun and informative. MJ was very prepared for class and had alternatives for each of the 4 dogs in our class. While we will need to continue practicing what we learned, I feel we made considerable progress in the 6 weeks we attended. Looking forward to our next classes.
Response from the owner
Highwater Dog TrainingThank you! You've done a great job with Peaches!
We contacted MJ after our 6mo old coonhound/beagle mix puppy, Goose, started exhibiting reactive behaviors around new people/dogs. We were at a point where just walking around our busy apartment complex seemed overwhelming. Throughout our 8 week program we learned how to work through our pups issues, how to interpret his body language and change our handling of him accordingly. MJ not only teaches you what to do but thoroughly explains the reasons behind each of her instructions. She is an extremely knowledgeable behaviorist who has given us (and our pup) the confidence and freedom we were looking for. She not only addressed Goose’s reactivity but also leash pulling, prey drive/impulse control, and overall manners. We can now enjoy everything we wanted to as dog owners, safely introducing him to friends and family, taking him to new places and parks, and even having him enjoy the company of our closest friends dogs. We could not recommend Cape Canine Academy more!
Response from the owner
Highwater Dog TrainingThank you for the wonderful review! I can't wait to see updates of all the fun things Goose gets to go do!
We adopted two dogs from the shelter that became very aggressive to one another when food was involved. They had attacked each other on more than one occasion and I didn't know if we'd be able to keep them both. Thanks to MJ with Instinctual Canine we can give these dogs a happy, safe home. Both dogs learned many new skills, and we learned how to manage and understand their behavior.
MJ was fantastic to work with. She helped us with a very sensitive German Shepherd puppy and we really appreciated her knowledge of the breed and reactive/sensitive dogs. She taught me so many things about working with dogs as well as super useful training methods. I appreciate the way she uses a variety of tools and tips and does not fall into only using one technique. I highly recommend working with her.
Response from the owner
Highwater Dog TrainingThank you! I loved working with you and Calvin, he's such a smart pup! I'm so glad I was able to help.
