Puppy Training Program

Puppy Plus+

Everything in Puppy Foundations, plus real-world adventures so your puppy learns to handle life outside your living room.

In-home puppy training in Port Charlotte, Punta Gorda, North Port and the surrounding areas.

Lessons8 private lessons
Where6 at home, 2 out in the world
Timeline8 weeks or less

Your puppy's world is about to get a whole lot bigger. Parks, sidewalks, patios, the vet's waiting room... it's all new, and it's all exciting. How they learn to handle it now shapes the dog they grow up to be.

Puppy Plus gives you the same strong start at home, then takes it out into the real world. We'll begin in your living room, where your puppy is most comfortable. Then we'll head out on field trips together, so you can practice around real distractions with me right there beside you.

Now picture a few months from now. Potty training is handled, the crate is no big deal, and your puppy is learning to walk with you instead of dragging you down the sidewalk. New people, new dogs and new places are starting to feel a little less overwhelming for them. Will they still get excited about a squirrel? Probably. But you'll know what to do, and they'll be off to a great start out in the world.

What can we work on together?

  • Potty training that actually sticks (goodbye, paper towel budget)
  • Turning the crate into their cozy happy place
  • Getting ahead of nipping, jumping and chewing
  • The first "I'm listening" basics: sit, down, and coming when you call
  • Walking nicely on a leash (less tug-of-war, more strolling)
  • Building confidence around new people, dogs and places
  • Settling down when you're out and about

MJ did a fantastic job with our job and was a pleasure to work with! I feel like we have more control over Norman and can better handle his issues with our other dog. She's incredibly professional and great with dogs.

Response from the owner

Highwater Dog TrainingThank you so much for the wonderful review, I'm so glad I was able to help you with Norman - he's such a sweet boy!

Emily Greenhalgh

We loved working with MJ. Our dogs are friendly, but intense. They would overwhelm guests. We needed training ourselves almost as much as the dogs and MJ was great with that.

She was thoughtful about what we actually needed and wanted to accomplish and changed her techniques and lessons around our dogs vs just doing a one-sized fits all approach. The actual practicing we had to do was bite sized enough that it felt do-able and we could see the dogs making progress right away. Both "Back" and "Place" have been life savers for us.

Her balanced approach to training and her patience with both us and the dogs has made me feel much more confident for having people over.

I would absolutely recommend her to anyone (and so would Maggie and Cooper! )

Response from the owner

Highwater Dog TrainingThank you Emily! You've done amazing work with Maggie and Cooper, they're lucky to have you!

Debbie Winnick

This is our 4th dog, but the most challenging puppy we have had. He is a love, but stubborn and thinks he is dominant. MJ gave us great ideas and really understood and supported us with the behavioral issues we were having with our new puppy, Riley. He is doing great and we are using all the new skills we learned from MJ. She is direct, but very calm...in just 6 private sessions with MJ we have pragmatic techniques that help Riley - he is well socialized, walks well [or, at least, better] on a leash and plays well with others.

Response from the owner

Highwater Dog TrainingThank you Debbie! I was so happy to help you and Riley!

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer puppy training?

I do, and it's genuinely one of the parts of this job I enjoy most. Getting started early makes such a difference, since you're building good habits from scratch instead of untangling problem behaviors after they've already taken root.

We'll work on the real foundation: socialization, confidence, clear communication, everyday manners, potty training, crate training, and all the practical skills that make those first months with a new puppy feel manageable instead of overwhelming.

Where do lessons take place?

Lessons typically take place at your home. Since that's where your dog already feels at ease, it usually means faster progress with less adjustment time needed. Once things are going well on your home turf, we can shift some lessons out into public spaces too, so your dog gets real practice with manners in the everyday situations where they'll actually need them.

Can you help with leash pulling?

Absolutely, and honestly, it's one of the most common reasons people first reach out. I'll work with your dog on genuine loose-leash walking, but just as important, I'll teach you how to communicate that clearly too, so walks stop feeling like a tug-of-war and start feeling like something you actually look forward to.

What ages of dogs do you train?

Every age, from brand-new puppies just settling into their first home to senior dogs still very much capable of learning something new. Each life stage brings its own set of considerations, so your plan gets shaped around your dog's actual age and personality, alongside whatever you're hoping to achieve together.

Starting with a puppy or working through something with a dog who's been around the block a few times, the timing is rarely the obstacle people assume it is. There's really no age where training stops being worthwhile.
